As you already know, Spanish is a very popular language today. Spanish has become the language that has grown the most in the number of speakers in recent years. It is estimated that we use between 10,000 and 27,000 words daily at minimum, and there are so many words we use that we don’t even notice them.

That’s why in this post we bring you 10 beautiful and frequent Spanish words. Some of these words you will certainly know and have in your vocabulary. Perhaps this selection might be somewhat subjective because everyone has different vocabulary, but we are sure that at least one of these words is used by you at least once a day.

1. Gratitude

Noun, feminine. This word is closely related to “thanks,” and gratitude is that feeling of being thankful to a person, animal, or yourself for some reason. For example: “I feel so much gratitude for my time in Madrid”.

2. Ojalá

Interjection. Expresses a strong desire for something to happen. For example: “Ojalá we meet again next summer”.

3. Hope

Noun, feminine. The state of mind that arises when what is desired seems achievable. For example: “Every day there is more hope that we will all recover some normality”.

4. Compassion

Noun, feminine. A feeling of pity, tenderness, and identification with someone’s suffering. For example: “We should feel more compassion for all the suffering the world is enduring”.

5. Nostalgia

Noun, feminine. The sadness of being absent from a place, family, friends, or the memory of something. For example: “María feels nostalgia when remembering her country”.

6. Tiquismiquis

Noun, plural. We use this word in plural even when referring to a singular person. It refers to someone who makes excuses or has reservations about doing something, but these excuses are trivial and lack real justification. For example: “Juan is a tiquismiquis – he could just say he doesn’t want to come and that’s it”.

7. Guay

Adjective, masculine/feminine. We use it to say that something or someone is excellent, wonderful, or cool. Also used to describe situations or places. For example: “María is very guay”, “The wedding was really guay, I loved it”.

8. Opportunity

Noun, feminine. This word has two meanings:

Singular: An opportune or convenient moment/circumstance for something. For example: “Going to Madrid is a great opportunity to learn Spanish”.

Plural: Refers to a store section offering discounted items. For example: “There’s a store on the corner with opportunity lamps – you should check them out”.

9. Ñoño/ña

Adjective. Describes a person or thing that is overly bland, prudish, sentimental, or cloying. For example: “Juan is too ñoño – he should have more adventures”, “The movie was too ñoña for my taste”.

10. Siesta

Noun, feminine. One of the most popular words among Spaniards and new Spanish speakers. The siesta is time dedicated to sleeping or resting after lunch. For example: “I’m going to take a siesta because I’m tired”.
